Are you interested in spending a year in City and Hackney working with the GP Confederation? Are you passionate about delivering high quality care to a diverse, mostly deprived, urban population? Our one-year Salaried GP Scheme aims to create tailor-made packages to attract GPs at different stages in their career to come and work in this interesting and vibrant part of London.

As well as doing some clinical sessions in one of our GP practices, our scheme offers paid sessions for GPs to undertake further study or development in an area of special interest and/or to provide clinical input into a GP Confederation project or development proposal.

You’ll have fortnightly peer supervision with your fellow scheme members which is run by experienced GP facilitators, so you can connect with other GPS on the scheme to share learning, feedback and case studies.

The scheme is flexible and is designed to meet the different career and development needs of either newly qualified GPs, GPs in the middle stages of their career, or very experienced GPs who may be looking for opportunities to do something different for a while

Here are some comments from doctors who have completed the scheme - or are currently in the programme – to find out why they have chosen City and Hackney to pursue their career as a GP:

Dr Tehseen Khan, GP at the Spring Hill Practice in Stamford Hill said: “I completed my time on the salaried GP scheme and it exceeded my expectations and hopes. I'd heard good things about Hackney and the role came at the right time for me. I joined the scheme because it gave me the ability to develop outside of a purely clinical GP role. It gives plenty of opportunities for personal and professional development, plus the ability to have a portfolio career. I’d definitely recommend it to others – I’ve openly advertised It to my peers.

Dr Zoe Tristram, Elsdale Street Surgery, Hackney. “I think City and Hackney GP Confederation and the CCG are very proactive and forward thinking, compared with anywhere else I have worked before. I’m very impressed so far. I feel very supported, and part of a team in my practice, by all the staff and particularly the other GPs. I feel supported with the clinical supervision offered by the scheme and I’ve also been offered a mentor because I am in my first five years of qualifying, which is great for extra support should I require it. There are many opportunities to learn, not only in a clinical environment but about how the GP Confederation and CCG work. I’ve recommended City and Hackney’s scheme my friends that are yet to qualify and others who are currently locums.

“My mentor has a wealth of experience that I could never imagine.”

“Useful to talk about career planning and life as a GP in Hackney.”

“It has helped me feel more focussed about career plans and feel more confident in my decision making.”

“Great to have an inspirational GP who is objective and keen to see me develop.”

“Helps with my anxiety surrounding my career and keeps me looking to the future.”

“Now I’m learning ways of finding information out myself and feeling more confident to manage issues independently in the future.”

“I’m so, so grateful for having access to a mentor. At the time I was in a real dilemma with regards to my career. Being able to talk this through was incredibly useful and to have an experienced GP mentor me, very valuable. I only wish I had had a mentor sooner.”

“Thankyou – it has been a vital programme for me. I might have left clinical work without this support and am now a very happy locally-working clinician.”

Here is what some of our GP Mentors said:

“I think the idea is excellent. I wish I’d had access to mentoring when a young GP. Perhaps it should be available to all GPs should they want it, at whatever stage in their career.”

“It’s an amazing resource which City and Hackney are lucky to have.”

“I think this is a very good programme supporting new GPs, and allowing me, as a recently-retired GP, to retain contact with general practice and enable me to give back to the next generation of GPs some of the enthusiasm and enjoyment of general practice that I enjoyed throughout my working life.”

“I find it a really fulfilling and rewarding experience and believe my mentees really value it and have benefitted from my support and signposting.”

“Rewarding for both parties.”
