COVID-19: What is coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause illness in animals and humans.  A virus causes illness by invading and taking over a cell, making lots of copies of itself and damaging the cell. Coronaviruses can cause respiratory infections like the common cold, as well as more serious diseases such as the recently discovered coronavirus, COVID-19.
